The Importance of Self-Care for Women with Rare Disease, Chronic Illness, or Disabilities

As women, we often put the needs of others before our own. This is especially true for women with rare disease, chronic illness, or disabilities; we have countless additional challenges and responsibilities to manage.

However, taking care of ourselves is essential for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of self-care for women with disabilities and provide practical tips for incorporating self-care into your daily routine.

I posted about my Morning Routine, which highlights a few of my consistent self-care practices.

Self-care is the practice of taking deliberate actions to improve your physical, mental, and emotional health. It involves prioritizing your own needs and making time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

One of the most significant benefits of self-care is that it can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Women with rare disease, chronic illness, or disabilities probably experience higher levels of stress due to the challenges they face, (like managing health, navigating the healthcare system, and dealing with societal stigma, just to name a few…)

By incorporating self-care practices into our daily routines, we can reduce stress levels and improve our overall well-being.

Self-care can also help to improve physical health; you already know the importance of prioritizing this. You probably experience other physical concerns, like chronic pain, fatigue, or mobility issues.

By engaging in physical self-care activities, such as exercise or stretching, women with disabilities can improve their physical health and reduce the risk of secondary health conditions.

For me this looks like walks on the treadmill, time on the ellitiptical, and Pilates (one-on-one or at-home).  Stretching daily is a non-negotiable.

In addition to physical health benefits, self-care can also improve mental health. Women with rare disease, chronic illness, or disabilities experience higher rates of depression and anxiety due to the challenges we constantly face. By engaging in self-care activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction, such as meditation or mindfulness, we can improve their mental health and well-being.

So, what are some practical tips? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Prioritize rest and relaxation: Make time for activities that help you relax and unwind, such as reading a book, taking a bath, or listening to music.

  2. Engage in physical activity: Find a physical activity that you enjoy and that is accessible to you, such as swimming, yoga, or chair exercises.

  3. Connect with others: Social support is essential for mental health and well-being. Make time to connect with friends, family, or support groups.

  4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and focusing on your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Try incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine, such as through meditation or deep breathing exercises.

  5. Seek professional support: If you are struggling with your mental health, consider seeking professional support from a therapist or counselor.

Incorporating self-care into your daily routine may take some time and effort, but, I promise, the benefits are well worth it. By prioritizing your own needs and taking care of yourself, you can improve your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As women with disabilities, we face unique challenges, but we also have unique strengths and resilience. By practicing self-care, we can tap into our inner strength and improve our overall quality of life.

In my Morning Routine Post, I talked about my obsession with the Superhuman App.  this is such a simple way to get started on your self-care and personal development.

In conclusion, self-care is essential for women with disabilities.

By prioritizing our own needs and taking care of ourselves, we can improve our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Incorporating self-care into our daily routine may take some time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it.

Try making self-care a priority and watch your life change xx
